Is Meridia Safe?

There are a number of prescription weight-loss aids out there, each one of them trying to overcome the negative stigma brought by the disastrous Fen Phen.  Meridia is one such prescription pill that was developed by Abbot Laboratories to be an appetite suppressant.  Is it safe and will it work?

Meridia Ingredients

Meridia is simply the brand name for one ingredient – sibutramine HCL monohydrate.  This is a chemical relative of amphetamines, but does not have quite the same stimulant effect.  It is intended mainly to reduce the appetite by triggering receptors in your brain.   There is enough research behind this chemical to support its effectiveness, but it comes with its downsides as well.
As for safety , side effects that have been reported with Meridia include dry mouth, increased appetite, nausea, strange taste in the mouth, and sexual impotence.  Other health risks that are still being investigated include sudden death, renal failure, and heart failure.

Meridia is clinically proven to reduce appetite in most cases, yes, but if you think you can lose weight without exercising with this product you are mistaken.  You may reduce calorie intake, but there is plenty of other work to be done.  As this product poses several serious health risks, is fairly high cost, and requires your doctor’s recommendation I definitely do not recommend it is a first resort.

    i took this for two months and i lost 14 lbs, the bad thing is that those 14 lbs i lost in the first 3 weeks, then after that nothing. it does work, you don’t get hungry, sugar (sweet) cravings are completely vanished and that was my main concern. it works, but i dont think i will take it anymore due to the side effects and there is not enough research out there yet, i guess it’s a new drug. the side effects i got from this were major depression. i felt so depressed, i continued taking it because if i don’t feel depressed due to the pill, i get depressed from being overweight, so it was no difference to me. i would highly recommend telling your doctor if you’re prone to depression though, that’s just my opinion, but i was happy go lucky before i took it and it does change your mood. now that i’ve stopped talking i’m happy again!

    I was on this pill for about 6 or 7 months. I started it weighing 184 and at the end weighed 145. The first couple of weeks I would get a little light headed if I got up to quick but that went away. I lost alot right away then maintained for about 2 months before I started losing again. Overall I am very happy and have kept the weight off.

    I just got my prescription for Meridia today, my doctor (a woman) highly recommended it for me and she also takes it herself to maintain her weight. She said the main side effect is not being able to sleep for the 1st and 2nd nights of taking it but if you take it before 7 in the morning it will be easier to sleep at night. I will keep you posted on how it works for me. :)

    DO NOT Take Meridia. I almost lost it completely. I lost 20 pounds in 3 months BUT for 2 years now, I have been suffering of panic attacks, dizziness, Fears of many things/situations including trafic, people, hights..etc. I was so paranoid that I went to all kinds of doctors and I thought I was dying.. I spent so much money on tests which results were always fine.. This product screws up your head and makes you go crazy trust me.

    try the health food stores they have fat burners that are all natural and no side effects also listen to the people that say “change your life style” eat less fat do some exercise even if it’s a little bit smaller portions more water in your diet back off the starch and sugar salt too should be cut way down a little of everything is good 3 meals a day even small ones starving doesn’t help your body will hold on to the fat if you don’t feed it hope this helps
