What is Caralluma?

Caralluma is a genus of plants consisting of about 120 species.  Most of the species occur in Africa, and areas of India including several taxa valued by people for their medicinal properties.  Of those species, the Caralluma fimbriata is especially used due to its appetite suppressing qualities.

The Story Behind Caralluma?

Caralluma Fimbriata is a succulent plant in the family Apocynaceae (family of flowering plants).  It has been consumed in rural India for hundreds of years.  Caralluma Fimbriata is usually consumed raw as a vegetable plant, or preserved into pickles.   Caralluma Fimbriata grows in the wild and can be found alongside roads and trails.

In times past Caralluma Fimbriata has been used as a source of liquid for hunters.  By carrying the plan with them, the hunters were able to extract the liquid from within the stems and continue on their journey.  The Caralluma Fimbriata was especially helpful to hunters and other fatigued travelers due to its hunger suppressing abilities.  In addition to curbing ones appetite, the plant also increases stamina.

Does Caralluma Work?

No. Taken to a research lab in India, the effects of Caralluma were put to the test.  Fifty overweight individuals were given either a placebo or a fixed quantity of Caralluma for sixty days.  Unfortunately, individuals receiving the Caralluma extract showed no significant change in body weight, body mass index, hip circumference, body fat, or energy intake.
